Pike survives execution; Tennessee halts remaining 2026 executions
Christa Gail Pike survived her own execution on Wednesday evening. After two doses of pentobarbital, the 50-year-old was "audibly snoring," according to her lawyers, and was taken to a hospital, where she is in critical condition. A medical expert retained by her team says a brain injury is likely.
Gov. Bill Lee halted the year's remaining scheduled execution — Gary Wayne Sutton's, set for December 3 — and ordered a third-party review of the state's lethal-injection protocol, though the reviewer has not yet been named. The Department of Correction insists it followed protocol. Pike's lawyer called on Lee to commute her sentence immediately, saying she "endured punishment greater than any other person in the history of the American death penalty." Lee called the outcome "a tragedy."
