Trump names intelligence chief Jay Clayton as AI czar
President Trump named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton the administration's AI czar on Sunday, putting the nation's top intelligence official in charge of a new "Super Intelligence Force" — Trump's preferred term for artificial intelligence. Clayton will share leadership with FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, OPM Director Scott Kupor, and Pentagon research chief Emil Michael; the group answers directly to Trump and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The task force has 120 days to deliver a report on AI's risks and benefits and define the government's role. Its charter: design defenses against threats from advanced systems while blocking heavy rules and industry capture that could hobble competition. Former AI czar David Sacks and Condoleezza Rice will serve as outside advisers. The move follows weeks of alarm from researchers and lawmakers — a Quinnipiac poll last week found 73% of Americans concerned that AI could threaten human survival — which Trump has largely brushed aside, warning that heavy regulation would hand China an advantage.
